is there a way to hook up a PlayStation game system to the monitor of my laptop instead of the TV?

You can do it.. You need a video encoder..
Something like the Adaptec Gamebridge ($55.49) would work (link below).. it’s actually built to do what you are asking for.. you can use it to record your game sessions as well..
You will need just the normal Playstation audio video cable with the yellow/red/white plugs.. the Gamebridge comes with all the wires you need to connect it to your computer..
Playing a video game system through a laptop doesn’t always work so well though.. There is usually some video lag so you see it on the screen like a second or two after it should have been..
