i cannot hear sound from speakers but when connected with earphones i can on laptop hp dv6?

Hello my question is i have a laptop hp dv6 3019 wm series and i helped out a customer by swapping out their motherboard because it was fried. so when i replaced the mother board i inspected everything, computer works everything just fine except, now there is no sound the customer states that before the laptops mother board got fried there used to be sound she states that she can hear sound if she plugs in an earphone in the jack so that tells me that the sound driver is fully functioning am i right? ok so i want to know what can i do to correct this problem any suggestions? why is there no sound playing through speakers? have the speakers gone bad? is there a short somewhere? thanks
